Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is a towering figure in Nigerian and African history, uniquely serving twice as Nigeria’s Head of State: first as a military ruler from 1976 to 1979, and then as a democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007.

Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, he had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, rising to the rank of General. After overseeing the peaceful transition to civilian rule in 1979, he famously handed power to a civilian government, a rare feat in post-colonial Africa at the time.

Following his release from wrongful imprisonment during the Abacha regime, Obasanjo was elected president in 1999, marking Nigeria’s return to democratic governance after years of military rule.

His second tenure focused on economic reforms, including the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), debt relief, and privatization.

A strong advocate for African unity and development, he has remained an active voice in international diplomacy and conflict resolution, often mediating in crises across the continent even after leaving office.

His post-presidency activities reflect his enduring commitment to good governance and peace.
