Akwa Ibom Commissioner Ini Ememobong resigns after Governor Eno’s defection to APC

Ini Ememobong resigns after Eno defects to APC, citing political principle and disagreement with the ruling party as reasons for his exit.

The Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, Ini Ememobong, stepped down just an hour after Governor Umo Eno announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ememobong shared his resignation letter via Facebook, affirming that the governor had earlier warned all appointees unwilling to switch parties with him to step aside.

“Prepare to resign the day I announce that I am moving,” Eno had previously said, insisting that cabinet loyalty must remain intact.

In response, Ememobong wrote: “Today, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive. While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s personal decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn.”

He added that his decision stemmed from a commitment to principled politics and long-standing opposition to the APC.

“This decision does not affect my personal relationship with the Governor,” he noted, acknowledging the trust Eno and his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, placed in him.

Reflecting on his tenure, Ememobong expressed satisfaction with his service and pledged continued respect for the Governor, even outside government.

He ended on a note of faith: “I do not know the future, but I know HE who holds the future.”
